Illinois Solar Panel Installation FAQ: Everything You Need to Know
Comprehensive answers to questions about solar panel installation, Illinois incentives, costs, financing, technology, and the installation process from our certified solar experts.
Solar system costs vary by system size and specifications. But federal tax credits can significantly reduce costs. Lehmann Electrical provides transparent pricing with no hidden fees and helps you maximize all available incentives. Actual costs depend on your specific system requirements. We never guarantee specific savings but provide detailed estimates based on your usage and location.
Illinois offers several strong solar incentives: 30% federal tax credit, Illinois Shines REC payments, net metering credits, smart inverter rebates, and property tax exemptions. For income-qualified households, Illinois Solar for All provides enhanced REC incentives that can significantly reduce or, in some cases, eliminate upfront costs. Lehmann Electrical handles incentive applications and helps you understand which programs you may qualify for. We accurately represent the Illinois Shines program and provide the required Illinois Shines Informational Brochure and Standard Disclosure Form. We do not make unsubstantiated claims about guaranteed savings.
Solar can be a worthwhile investment for many Illinois homeowners. With available incentives like the federal tax credit and Illinois Shines REC payments, solar systems may pay for themselves over time while providing long-term electricity generation. Actual savings and payback periods depend on your energy usage, system size, utility rates, and available incentives. Solar systems may also increase home value. We provide detailed, property-specific estimates but do not guarantee specific savings unless this is explicitly stated in your contract.
From contract signing to system activation, most Illinois solar installations take 4-8 weeks. This includes permitting (1-2 weeks), equipment procurement (1-2 weeks), and installation (1-2 days). Lehmann Electrical coordinates with utilities and handles all paperwork to minimize timeline. Complex installations or those requiring panel upgrades may take longer, but we provide detailed timelines upfront. We follow all Illinois Shines program requirements and prevailing wage laws where applicable.
Most Illinois homes need 5-10kW systems to offset 70-100% of electricity usage. Our Master Electrician performs comprehensive site assessments including roof orientation (azimuth), tilt angle, shading analysis, and electrical panel capacity review. We evaluate the site's azimuth, orientation, and shading before designing the system, and the system design is completed before you sign any contract, as required by Illinois Power Agency guidelines. We factor in future needs like EV charging and battery storage. System sizing is based on your actual ComEd or Ameren usage data, roof characteristics, and Illinois Shines program requirements for optimal REC value.
Many Illinois homes do need panel upgrades to safely accommodate solar systems. Lehmann Electrical performs a free electrical assessment to determine if your current panel can handle the additional solar capacity. If an upgrade is needed, we can bundle it with your solar installation and often qualify for additional incentives. We follow all National Electrical Code requirements and Illinois-specific regulations for safe installations.
Net metering allows solar system owners to receive credit for excess electricity sent back to the grid. In Illinois, utilities like ComEd and Ameren credit excess solar production at retail rates (up to 40kW systems). This means if your solar system produces more electricity than you use, you receive credits on your bill at the same rate you pay for electricity. At year-end, any remaining credits may be paid out at a lower rate or carried forward. Lehmann Electrical ensures proper interconnection and metering setup for maximum net metering benefits.
Lehmann Electrical provides comprehensive warranties: 12-month workmanship warranty covering all installation defects, 25-year panel performance warranty, 10-year inverter warranty, and battery warranties (if applicable). We also offer annual maintenance contracts and emergency support. All warranties are backed by our BBB A+ rating and licensed Master Electrician expertise. We help with warranty claims and manufacturer coordination when needed.
Standard grid-tied solar systems shut down during power outages for safety reasons (anti-islanding protection). With battery storage, you can have backup power for essential circuits. Lehmann Electrical can install battery systems that provide seamless backup power during outages. We ensure all installations comply with utility requirements and safety standards. Battery systems can be configured to automatically provide power when the grid goes down.
Battery storage is optional but provides valuable benefits: backup power during outages, time-of-use optimization, and increased self-consumption. Illinois utilities offer $300/kWh rebates for battery installations. Tesla Powerwall and similar systems integrate seamlessly with solar. We can install battery-ready hybrid inverters now for future expansion. Battery storage makes most sense for homes with frequent outages, time-of-use rates, or critical power needs.
Illinois Solar for All (ILSFA) provides enhanced REC incentives for income-qualified households earning ≤80% Area Median Income. These enhanced incentives can significantly reduce or eliminate upfront solar costs. Eligibility is based on household size and county-specific income limits. ILSFA includes consumer protections like guaranteed savings requirements and 14-day cancellation rights. As an Approved Vendor, Lehmann Electrical can verify your eligibility and handle all ILSFA program applications.
