    Frequently Asked Questions

Typical: 12–16 years (based on calculator showing ~12.8 years for 13 kW system generating $1,969/year in savings). Your actual payback depends on electricity consumption, local rates, system size, and available incentives.

Yes. Illinois Shines is a state program paying you for Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) your system produces. If your system participates, the RECs are sold to utilities—you cannot claim environmental benefits. Your benefit is the upfront SREC payment ($3,000–$10,000+) plus reduced electricity bills. Enrollment subject to program capacity and approval—not guaranteed.

Timeline: Year 1: System installed and operational. Year 2: File taxes (April 15 deadline). Receive 30% Federal ITC on your tax return. Example: $30,000 system = $9,000 credit. Unused credit can be carried forward up to 20 years if not fully used.

For ownership + tax incentives: Yes. You must own your home to claim the 30% Federal ITC and qualify for most incentives. Renters can participate in community solar programs (credits on electricity bill) but don’t own systems.

Yes. Your solar system can be designed to accommodate battery storage (Tesla Powerwall) later. We design systems with future expansion in mind. Adding storage is typically straightforward, though electrical modifications may be required.

On-site installation: 1–3 days. Full timeline (consultation to activation): 8–12 weeks, depending on permitting speed and utility queue. We maintain transparency about timelines throughout.

1-year workmanship warranty on our installation. Equipment manufacturers provide separate warranties: 25–30 years for solar panels, 10–15 years for inverters. We manage all warranty claims. Does NOT cover manufacturer defects, weather damage, or customer misuse.

If you own the system: Solar systems are transferable to new owner. If you lease or have a PPA: Terms vary some transfer, some require buyout. Your contract specifies. Battery systems (Powerwall) typically transfer as well.

No. Lehmann Electrical is an independent solar installer and electrical contractor. We are NOT employed by, representing, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any utility, utility program, consumer group, or governmental body. We are an Approved Vendor under Illinois Shines (state incentive program).

Important Consumer Disclosures — Illinois Solar Customers

Lehmann Electrical & Design is an independent solar installer and seller of photovoltaic systems. We are NOT employed by, representing, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any utility, utility program, consumer group, or governmental body. We are an Approved Vendor under the Illinois Power Agency's Adjustable Block Program (Illinois Shines).

Your Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) & Environmental Attributes

If your system participates in Illinois Shines, the renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by your system will be sold by Lehmann Electrical to Illinois utilities. This means:

    • You will NOT receive the environmental benefits of your system's generation.
    • You cannot claim your system uses "clean" or "renewable" electricity.
    • Environmental attributes belong to the utilities that purchase the RECs.
    • Your primary benefit is the upfront SREC payment from Illinois Shines and reduced electricity costs.

    Important Documents You Will Receive

    • Illinois Shines Informational Brochure: Describes the program, your rights, and incentive details.
    • Standard Disclosure Form: Details YOUR specific system design, costs, incentives, and estimated financial return. This will be provided BEFORE you sign any contract.
