How Your EV Charger Estimate Is Calculated

No hidden assumptions. These are the numbers behind every estimate above, so you know exactly where your savings come from.

Battery Size

Small and mid-size EVs are figured at 50 kWh, large sedans at 85 kWh, and SUVs or trucks at 120 kWh to estimate full charge time.

Charger Power

Most homes get a 32-amp Level 2 charger at 240 volts. Basic needs with a small EV drop to 16 amps, and fast needs with a larger EV step up to 48 amps.

Circuit and Panel

A 20, 40 or 50-amp dedicated circuit matches the charger. A 100-amp panel likely needs an upgrade at 32 amps or more, and a 150-amp panel may need one at 48 amps.

Equipment and Install

Equipment is $599, or $799 for high-output units. Installation starts at $600, plus $800 for a detached garage, $400 for outdoor mounting, and $500 to $1,800 for panel work.

Tax Credit

The estimate subtracts a federal tax credit of 30% of equipment and installation, up to $1,000.

Fuel Savings

Based on 12,000 miles a year: a 25 MPG gas car at $3.50 per gallon versus an EV at 3.5 miles per kWh and $0.14 per kWh, about $1,200 a year.
