Cost & Savings

Residential Solar Cost & ROI in Illinois

Understanding residential solar costs helps you make an informed decision. We provide transparent pricing and help you understand and access all available incentives.

System Cost Factors

Residential solar system costs typically range from $15,000 to $40,000+ before incentives, depending on system size (typically 5-10kW for average homes), roof complexity, electrical upgrades needed, and equipment selected. We provide detailed quotes with all costs itemized.

30% Federal Tax Credit

The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) provides a 30% credit on your total system cost, including equipment, labor, and permits. This credit expires December 31, 2025. You claim this credit when filing your taxes for the year of installation.

Illinois Shines REC Payments

Illinois Shines provides upfront REC payments that can reduce your system cost. Payment amounts vary by system size and location. The renewable attributes ("RECs") of solar electricity will be sold by us to keep installation costs affordable.

Net Metering Savings

Excess solar production earns credits at retail electricity rates. Credits roll over monthly and annually. Many homeowners may see 50-90% reduction in electricity bills, with typical payback periods of 6-10 years after incentives.

Solar Incentives

Residential Solar Incentives in Illinois

Federal tax credits, Illinois Shines REC payments, and utility rebates may help reduce your system cost. We help you understand and access all available incentives.

30% Federal Tax Credit (ITC)

Expires December 31, 2025 • The federal Investment Tax Credit provides a 30% credit on your total system cost, including equipment, labor, permits, and sales tax. You claim this credit on IRS Form 5695 when filing your taxes for the year of installation. This credit can significantly reduce your net system cost.

Illinois Shines REC Payments

Illinois Shines (Adjustable Block Program) provides upfront REC payments based on your system size and location. Payment amounts vary and are typically applied to reduce your installation cost. The renewable attributes ("RECs") of solar electricity will be sold by us to keep installation costs affordable. As an Approved Vendor (ID: 2205), we handle all program applications.

Illinois Solar for All (ILSFA)

Households earning ≤80% Area Median Income may qualify for enhanced REC incentives through ILSFA that can significantly reduce or eliminate upfront costs. We verify eligibility and handle all program requirements. ILSFA provides guaranteed savings (as specified in ILSFA contracts) and consumer protections for qualifying households. The renewable attributes ("RECs") of solar electricity will be sold by us to keep installation costs affordable.

Smart Inverter Rebates

ComEd and Ameren Illinois offer $300/kW rebates for smart inverters that meet UL 1741 SA/SB standards. These rebates help offset inverter costs and are required for systems over 10kW in ComEd territory. We ensure all systems qualify for these utility rebates.

Property Tax Exemption

Illinois provides a property tax exemption for solar installations. The added value from your solar system does not increase your property taxes, protecting your investment and improving your ROI.

Net Metering Credits

Excess solar production earns credits at retail electricity rates. Credits roll over monthly and annually, maximizing your savings. Systems up to 40kW qualify for net metering in Illinois. We ensure proper bi-directional meter installation and interconnection.

    Residential Solar Installation FAQ

Common questions about residential solar installation in Illinois. Have more questions? Contact us for personalized answers.

Residential solar system costs typically range from $15,000 to $40,000+ before incentives, depending on system size (typically 5-10kW for average homes), roof complexity, electrical upgrades needed, and equipment selected. The 30% federal tax credit and Illinois Shines REC payments may significantly reduce costs. We provide detailed quotes with all costs itemized and all incentives explained. The renewable attributes ("RECs") of solar electricity will be sold by us to keep installation costs affordable.

Complete residential solar installation includes: solar panels, inverter, racking system, electrical wiring, permits, inspections, utility interconnection, and system activation. We also handle all incentive applications and provide 12-month workmanship warranty plus 25-year panel performance warranties. We ensure your system is optimized for Illinois Shines incentives and net metering credits. The renewable attributes ("RECs") of solar electricity will be sold by us to keep installation costs affordable.

Typical residential solar installation timeline: 1-2 weeks for site assessment and design, 1-3 weeks for permits, 1-2 days for physical installation, 1-2 weeks for inspections and utility interconnection. Total timeline is typically 4-8 weeks from contract to system activation. We keep you informed throughout the process. Important: We complete site assessment and system design before any contract is signed. You will receive the Illinois Shines Informational Brochure at first contact and the Standard Disclosure Form before signing any contract.

From contract signing to system activation, most Illinois solar installations take 4-8 weeks. This includes permitting (1-2 weeks), equipment procurement (1-2 weeks), and installation (1-2 days). Lehmann Electrical coordinates with utilities and handles all paperwork to minimize timeline. Complex installations or those requiring panel upgrades may take longer, but we provide detailed timelines upfront. We follow all Illinois Shines program requirements and prevailing wage laws where applicable.

Your roof should have 15+ years of remaining useful life for optimal solar investment. During our free site assessment, we evaluate your roof condition and recommend if roof replacement is needed before solar installation. If your roof needs replacement, we can coordinate timing to minimize costs and disruption.

Yes! Illinois receives 4.2-4.8 peak sun hours daily—excellent for solar production. Solar panels work in all weather conditions, including cloudy days. Snow typically slides off angled panels, and panels actually perform better in cooler temperatures. We design systems specifically for Illinois climate conditions.

Before signing any contract, you will receive: (1) The Illinois Shines Informational Brochure (provided at first contact and again before contract execution), (2) A completed Standard Disclosure Form with a standardized savings estimate that enables you to compare offers between vendors, and (3) Your custom system design based on our site assessment. We complete site assessment and system design before any contract is signed.

Lehmann Electrical provides comprehensive warranties: 12-month workmanship warranty covering all installation defects, 25-year panel performance warranty, 10-year inverter warranty, and battery warranties (if applicable). We also offer annual maintenance contracts and emergency support. All warranties are backed by our BBB A+ rating and licensed Master Electrician expertise. We help with warranty claims and manufacturer coordination when needed.

Standard grid-tied solar systems shut down during power outages for safety reasons (anti-islanding protection). With battery storage, you can have backup power for essential circuits. Lehmann Electrical can install battery systems that provide seamless backup power during outages. We ensure all installations comply with utility requirements and safety standards. Battery systems can be configured to automatically provide power when the grid goes down.

Solar panels typically increase home value. Studies show homes with solar sell faster and for higher prices. If you own the system, it transfers with the home sale. If you have a solar lease or PPA, the new homeowner typically assumes the agreement. We can provide documentation for home sales and help transfer warranties.

Important Consumer Disclosures — Illinois Solar Customers

Lehmann Electrical & Design is an independent solar installer and seller of photovoltaic systems. We are NOT employed by, representing, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any utility, utility program, consumer group, or governmental body. We are an Approved Vendor under the Illinois Power Agency's Adjustable Block Program (Illinois Shines).

Your Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) & Environmental Attributes

If your system participates in Illinois Shines, the renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by your system will be sold by Lehmann Electrical to Illinois utilities. This means:

    • You will NOT receive the environmental benefits of your system's generation.
    • You cannot claim your system uses "clean" or "renewable" electricity.
    • Environmental attributes belong to the utilities that purchase the RECs.
    • Your primary benefit is the upfront SREC payment from Illinois Shines and reduced electricity costs.

    Important Documents You Will Receive

    • Illinois Shines Informational Brochure: Describes the program, your rights, and incentive details.
    • Standard Disclosure Form: Details YOUR specific system design, costs, incentives, and estimated financial return. This will be provided BEFORE you sign any contract.
