Cabinet Lighting Options That Actually Work

Under-Cabinet Strips

This is what most people want. LED strips mounted under your upper cabinets light up the whole counter. No more working in shadows or squinting to see if that chicken is done.

We hide the strips completely so you don’t see them, just the light they put out. Way better than those stick-on battery things from the hardware store that quit working after six months.

Most Milwaukee kitchens have standard cabinet spacing, so installation is pretty straightforward. Newer Waukesha County homes sometimes have custom cabinets that need different approaches.

Inside Cabinet Lights

Ever spend five minutes looking for something in a deep cabinet? Interior lights solve that immediately. Open the door, light comes on, you see everything.

Works great in pantries where you’re always digging around for ingredients. Also nice in glass-front cabinets where you want to show off nice dishes or glassware.

Motion sensors mean you don’t have to think about switches. Door opens, light turns on. Door closes, light turns off.

Accent Lighting

Some people want cabinet lighting for decoration, not just function. Crown molding lights, toe-kick lighting, that sort of thing. Creates ambiance in the kitchen.

Glass cabinet lighting makes your dishes look like they’re in a fancy restaurant display. Good for entertaining or if you have nice stuff worth showing off.

We don’t do a lot of purely decorative lighting, but it works well combined with functional under-cabinet strips.

Why LED Cabinet Lighting Makes Sense

Electricity Bills

LED cabinet lights use almost no electricity. You can leave them on all evening and not notice it on your electric bill. Try that with old-style bulbs and watch your bill jump.

Some people worry about the upfront cost of LEDs, but they pay for themselves pretty quickly. Especially when you factor in not having to replace bulbs every few months. Wisconsin Electric and We Energies sometimes have rebates for LED upgrades. We keep track of what's available and help you get any money back that's out there.

No More Bulb Changes

Quality LEDs last about 15 years. You'll probably redo your kitchen before these lights quit working. No more climbing on counters to change bulbs in awkward spots.

The old halogen cabinet lights got hot and burned out constantly. Real pain when they're mounted under cabinets where you can barely reach them. LEDs run cool, so they don't heat up your cabinets or whatever you store near them.

Light Color Options

You can pick warm light that looks like regular light bulbs, or cooler white light that's better for detailed work. Most people choose warm for ambiance, cool for food prep areas.

Some newer systems let you adjust the color temperature with a switch. Start with warm light for dinner, switch to bright white for cleanup. Dimmable LEDs give you even more control. Bright for cooking, dim for late-night snacks.

How We Install Cabinet Lighting

Planning Your Layout

First thing we do is figure out how you actually use your kitchen. Where do you prep food? Where do you need better light? What outlets can we use for power?

Some kitchens have outlets right where we need them. Others require running new wiring. We measure everything and plan the installation so nothing looks tacked on afterward.

Good cabinet lighting should look like it was always part of your kitchen design.

Running the Wiring

Most cabinet lighting uses low-voltage wiring that’s safer and easier to work with than regular house wiring. We install small transformers that convert regular power down to what the LEDs need.

Sometimes we can tap into existing outlets under your cabinets. Other times we need to run new circuits from your electrical panel. Depends on your kitchen layout and electrical setup.

All wiring gets hidden inside cabinets or behind trim. You shouldn’t see any wires when we’re done.

Where We Install Cabinet Lighting

Milwaukee County

Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, New Berlin, Shorewood. We know these neighborhoods pretty well after five years of kitchen lighting work. Wauwatosa has everything from 1920s bungalows to brand new construction. Each type of house presents different installation challenges. We've worked on all of them.

Downtown Milwaukee condos sometimes have really unique kitchen layouts. Open lofts, exposed brick, unusual cabinet configurations. We figure out lighting solutions that work with the existing design.

Waukesha County

Brookfield, Elm Grove, Butler, Pewaukee, Waukesha. Lots of custom homes and high-end kitchens out there. People invest serious money in these kitchens, so the lighting needs to match that quality level.

Executive homes often have multiple kitchen areas - main kitchen, butler's pantry, wet bar. We can coordinate lighting throughout all these spaces for a consistent look.
